A space devoted to alabaster

Emerging from a desire to bring alabaster to the forefront of the international art scene, the Foundation is a new creative space designed to promote alabaster as a new artistic medium.

Proposing to explore the infinite facets of this stone and to invent new forms of use, the Alain Ellouz foundation invites artists across all disciplines to participate in the emergence of collections of works and objects from the stone via workshops, artist residencies or performances.

The Alain Ellouz foundation wishes to reveal the full potential of alabaster through the arts.

Alain Ellouz: story of a passion

As a sculptor by passion, Alain is also a born entrepreneur. In 1985, he created an IT business ranked among the top 100 computer engineering services companies in France, which he then sold in 2000. Alain then embarks on an adventure to transform the Domaine du Montcel, a historic site and monument in Jouy-en-Josas well-known as the headquarters of the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, into a venue for events and artistic expression. It was during these years that Alain Ellouz continued to sculpt, eventually discovering alabaster.

Since time immemorable, alabaster has fascinated its beholder with its exceptional translucence and moon-white beauty. Early on, Egyptians sculpted this fragile, soft stone to create canopic jars. However, alabaster was shunned by artists and designers for a very long time thereafter, forgotten or used only to create minor objects or make plaster. In 2005, Alain felt a calling and decided to introduce alabaster into the exclusive world of luxury decor.

Alain teamed up with the talented designer Marion Biais-Sauvetre to tackle the difficult challenge of the stone's fragility by developing innovative techniques. They worked around its naturally brittle character, thus making it more resistant and impermeable. From these techniques emerged a collection of contemporary alabaster objects and lighting elements. Atelier Alain Ellouz was born!

Today, the workshop's creations are globally recognized and sought after by major designers.

The Alain Ellouz Foundation for Alabaster ushers in a new phase in the pursuit to promote the stone as a key material in the world of art and design.
